Reikartz Sevastopol – Recreation and entertainment |
|
A while ago a visit to Sevastopol was possible only with permission of military authorities. Now these restrictions are removed and Sevastopol is opened to all travelers. History of Sevastopol has begun in V B.C. with establishment of an ancient Greek colony Chersonese which became the richest town in ancient Crimea. In 40 A.C. the town became the part of the Roman Empire and a place of exile. That is why Sevastopol is associated with the names of several revered Christian saints – St Andrew the Apostle, St. Clement, St. Martin.
In 988 A.C. the city was conquered by Prince St. Vladimir who was baptized here. From this time the history of Russian Orthodoxy has begun. In 1783 on the place of today's Sevastopol was a poor village Akhtiar. The convenient bay was ideally situated for the fleet and in early 1784 Catherine II ordered to establish here a fortress called Sevastopol (Greek: "city of glory"). In 1804 the fortress became the main Russian naval port on the Black Sea. Thirty years after Admiral Mikhail Lazarev took the lead of fleet and turned poor village into thriving city of Sevastopol.
During the Crimean War the city within 394 days repelled the attack of combined forces of Britain, France and Turkey. The events of heroic defense in 1854-1855 had glorified Sevastopol in Russia and attracted the attention of the whole world. Sevastopol was almost destructed and for a long time recovered from the war but by the end of the XIX century it has become the capital of Crimea.
